Description

The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT: Saunders et al. 1993) consists of ten questions that assess quantity/frequency of alcohol consumption (e.g., number of drinks typically consumed when drinking alcohol), symptoms of a potential alcohol use disorder (e.g., frequency of not engaging in expected activities due to alcohol use), and specific problems associated with alcohol use (e.g., injuring someone else). It is not a formal diagnostic measure but is used to identify individuals who may be engaging in harmful alcohol use. Scores on each item range from 0 to 4, with higher scores indicating more problematic alcohol use. Scores of 8+ on the measure have generally been used to identify individuals engaging in potentially hazardous or harmful alcohol use.
