Ethics in the Practice of Clinical Neuropsychology: Foundations and New Horizons

Ethics provides a framework for understanding and examining morality, which broadly defined, includes socially accepted norms about appropriate and inappropriate human conduct and encompasses consensual virtues, rights, governing principles, and rules. Ethics codes are developed to reflect and provide guidance regarding the moral actions of specific groups, such as health care professionals. The American Psychological Association’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (APA 2010) offers both foundational ethical principles and functional ethical standards. Within the competency based model of professional practice, foundational principles reflect the values of the profession and are often considered aspirational in nature. Conversely, functional ethical standards establish minimally acceptable professional behaviors and are enforceable codes of conduct whose ultimate purpose is protection of consumer welfare.
