Definition

Techniques used to control or modify an action or performance of a subject. This is a less-intensive version of behavior modification in which the goal is to develop, strengthen, maintain, decrease, or eliminate behaviors in a planned or systematic way. Behavior management skills are particularly important to enhance the probability that individuals, or groups, choose behaviors that are prosocial. Prosocial behaviors are typically seen as personally fulfilling, productive, and socially acceptable. The process typically includes identifying negative behaviors, raising awareness about alternative behaviors, and changing the environment by modifying antecedents to behaviors or the consequences. Persons surviving a traumatic brain injury (TBI) often have behavioral disturbances such as disinhibition and/or agitation.
