According to the 11th edition of the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, the definition of education is “(1a) the action or process of educating or of being educated… (1b) the knowledge and development resulting from an educational process” and “(2) the field of study that deals mainly with methods of teaching and learning in schools (Education n.d.).” Education as a verb, to educate, is derived from the Latin word educatus or educere (to bring out, to lead forth) composed of the components ex (out) and ducere (to lead) (Harper n.d.).

Education has existed since prehistoric times with the basic transmission of knowledge about hunting and gathering to more advanced methods using early writing systems in ancient civilizations.
