A particularly active part of a fire (USDA 2019).


Fire is always dynamic, changeable, and constantly spreading. Firefighters are always interested in which are the more active parts of the fire and which is the one that can spread or is already spreading. The term hotspot may have different meanings, depending on the scale and timeframe under consideration.

Landscape Scale Hotspots

At a landscape scale over a long time period, hotspot maps show the density of ignitions that can occur in the territory. By definition, in areas with higher population density, the number of ignitions will be higher than in areas of the territory more depopulated (González et al. 2012).

At a landscape scale but over a short time period, hotspots are the hottest areas in the burning zone. They help to identify the more active part of a fire or the direction in which the fire is spreading. So, in satellite data, hotspots are defined as image pixels whose...
