Basic Biographical Information
José Berenguer obtained his licentiate degree in prehistory and archaeology from the Universidad de Chile (UCH) in 1975 and his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2002. He had begun his higher education as a geography major at UCH in 1971 but was unable to complete that program owing to the military coup that occurred in Chile in 1973. However, he credits those early studies with instilling a certain geographical orientation in his research. Dr. Berenguer served as professor in UCH’s Department of Anthropology from 1978 to 1982 and from 1992 to 1999. In 1979, he worked as an investigator at the Instituto Otavaleño de Antropología in Ecuador.
