Botany and Ecology
Perennial plants, 12–55 cm high, glabrous, glaucous. Root cylindrical, vertical or obliquely descending. Stems branching only at base, erect, virgate, dead stems long persistent. Basal leaves small, squamiform; cauline leaves subsessile, broadly linear, the lower ones spatulate-linear or linear-lanceolate, the upper ones ovate-lanceolate, 1.3–2.5(2.8) cm long, 1.5–4(10) mm wide, apex obtuse, abruptly cuspidate or often acuminate, margins entire, thick, with obscure parallel nerves, glabrous, enveloping above each other. Flowers small, gathered in complex inflorescences (cyathium) grouped in umbels; each cyathum composed of a female flower surrounded by male flowers.
