Introduction

As the result of detailed geophysical, coastal, and geological surveys, including drillcore and seismic studies conducted in increasing detail, the Gulf of Mexico is among the best explored marine basins, in terms of its late Quaternary history as well. Conditions throughout the Last Eustatic Cycle (LEC) provide insight into potential future coastal and nearshore changes. This summary broadly outlines northern and eastern Gulf coastal changes between the Last Interglacial (LIG) climate optimum (thermal maximum) and the present highstand. Landform development during marine highstand, lowstand, and intermediate phases; their influence on Gulfwide sedimentation patterns following the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) indicate the overwhelming role both of relict and modern sediment sources in the construction modes and dimensions of coastal barriers, deltaic and other lithosomes and their highly varied sediment sources.
