Background

Dr. Terry L. Maple is an expert in animal behavior and a pioneer in empirically based zoo management. He was born in 1946 in Maywood, California. His academic journey was inspired in part by childhood visits to the San Diego Zoo. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of the Pacific and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis, under the mentorship of Robert Sommer and Gary Mitchell. He directed Zoo Atlanta for 18 years and oversaw its transformation into a world renowned research focused zoological institution. Dr. Maple is trained as a psychologist but integrates perspectives from biology, environmental design, and more. He has advocated for an empirical zoo, with decisions relating to animal care, visitor experience, and exhibit design being driven by scientific research and findings.
