Definition
Verrucous carcinoma of the larynx is a rare variant of well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with a favorable prognosis. It has an exophytic, warty macroscopic appearance and is histologically a well-differentiated tumor lacking cytological signs of malignancy. It grows slowly, and even though it is locally invasive and can cause extensive destruction if left untreated, pure verrucous carcinoma is believed to be unable to metastasize. Hybrid carcinomas also exist, composed of verrucous carcinoma and foci of conventional SCC, and harbor a metastatic potential (Cardesa and Zidar 2005).
Etiopathogenesis of laryngeal verrucous carcinoma is unclear, similarly to verrucous carcinoma at other sites. Most patients are reported to be current or former cigarette smokers. Controversial data exists on the pathogenetic role of human papillomaviruses (HPV), with reported incidence of HPV detection in verrucous carcinoma spanning from 0 % to 85 %.
