Early Life and Educational Background
Marilynn Brewer was born as Marilynn Bolt in Chicago, Illinois, in 1942. She later married Robert Brewer, a fellow social psychologist, in 1966 while writing her master’s thesis. Although the couple divorced after having their daughter, Christine, Marilynn retained the surname Brewer. Her parents did not attend college but encouraged Marilynn to apply for a bachelor’s degree. Marilynn completed her B.A. in Social Sciences at North Park College in 1963 with honors under the mentorship of Jean Driscoll, who she credits as being an influence behind her decision to pursue graduate work. In her book chapter “In Retrospect…” (Brewer 2011), she writes that because much of her family did not attend college, she would not have considered a graduate degree had she not had the support and encouragement of Jean Driscoll.
