Morzhovets Island – island at the entrance of the Mezen Bay, in the White Sea. The area of the island is about 110 km2. Loose, sandy-clayey soil with layers of fossil ice compose the island. The coasts are steep and precipitous. The surface is covered with tundra vegetation. The dimensions of M.I. are being significantly reduced by the erosion of waves. The island lies on a shelf with depths less than 10 m that extends from the Abramov Coast. Near the western coast of M.I., the Morzhovsky Lighthouse is situated. There is a fishing village on the island. Apparently, the island was named by the fishers for its rich walrus (Morzhovets – Walrus) rookeries.
