Insist on no more than equity” is one important aspect of reciprocity and a way of solving social dilemmas cooperatively.

Introduction

Equity can be defined as the distribution of resources between people according to their contribution or necessity. Insisting on no more than equity is a characteristic of successful cooperative strategies in social dilemmas, that is, situations in which individuals interests are in conflict and they may be tempted to adopt selfish choices. Axelrod (1984) states that “a strategy based on reciprocity can allow the other player to get the reward for mutual cooperation, which is the same payoff it gets for itself when both strategies are doing their best” (p. 137). In other words, reciprocity means that individuals will receive back from others the equivalent of what they invested, and equity in reciprocity means that everyone in an interaction will eventually get their fair share.
