Abstract
The direct creation of highly porous silicon by chemical conversion of highly porous silica is receiving increasing attention for application areas that require relatively inexpensive material. Silica can be reduced to silicon at moderate temperatures with magnesium vapor which is the most popular route. The range of different silica feedstocks utilized to date is surveyed, as is the morphology of the porous silicon structures achieved. Key technical challenges are then highlighted and alternative reduction chemistries mentioned.
