Abstract

Federico Angelo Cesi (1585–1630) was a Roman-Umbrian patrician who was the founder and patron of the Accademia dei Lincei. Direct seeing, without the peripatetic filter, was essential for the Linceans. Cesi used a compound microscope which the Lincean Galileo Galilei had invented but which had been perfected by the brothers Kuffler, who had distributed it in Rome. With the use of this optical device, the Prince produced several collections of precise drawings of his observations of insects, fungi, fossils, and plants. The naturalist was one of the first in the history of science to publish microscopic observations of plants. Cesi also proposed a system of classification of plants and aimed to establish the foundations of the science of plants.
