Definition

Water is one of the most essential elements to survival. Globally, the amount of available water is rapidly decreasing, affecting availability and access for potability, sanitation, and agriculture. Water scarcity is an urgent and growing problem.

Introduction

Water scarcity is defined as the lack of available, safe water and water supplies to meet the needs of the community. Statistics show that, globally, 2.1 billion people lack the access to water that is safe to consume and 4.5 billion people lack access to services of sanitation. Estimates are that 40% of the global population is affected by water scarcity, and this number is predicted to increase (United Nations n.d.-a).
