Preemployment skills are a set of skills that establish the foundation of employment skills. Conceptually, they are the building blocks of more advanced skills and are essential for an individual on the autism spectrum to master before he or she can be successful in the world of work. These skills are in direct contrast to employment skills which often are job specific. These are often referred to as soft job skills.

Generically, preemployment skills include behaviors such as bathing, grooming, and dressing appropriately for the particular work environment. Related to being able to present oneself professionally in a work environment with clean clothing is the skill of being able to do laundry including washing, folding, ironing, and hanging of clothing.
