After  Friedrich Bessel’s death, his assistant, August Busch, became the second director of the Königsberg Observatory. The total eclipse of the Sun on 28 July 1851 was observable from Scandinavia and Russia. Busch arranged for a photographer to produce a daguerreotype of the event. It was the first photograph made of a total solar eclipse.
