An interactome is a protein–protein interaction (PPI) network that contains ideally all possible PPIs in a specific organism. Although the current knowledge about all PPIs in model organisms is far from complete, an interactome may be approximated by assembling all known PPIs of a certain confidence in an organism. For example, a human interactome of high confidence based on experiments and curations can be retrieved from the human protein reference database (HPRD), which currently contains 39,194 protein interactions (the ninth release) (Keshava Prasad et al. 2009).
