n (1903) (alpha ray) A charged particle, essentially a helium nucleus, emitted during the radioactive decay of certain elements. Alpha particles have little penetrating power, typically dissipating their energy in passing through a few centimeters of air, but they can do harm if released within the human body. In simple form it is a radioactive emission consisting of two protons and two neutrons as in a \({}_2^4\)
