Definition of the Subject

Based on 20 years of experience, the author will inform readers on solar-driven desalination using different types of solar systems and also different desalination systems. These simple and robust devices and the use of clean solar fuel not only conserve conventional fuels but also help to produce additional water and to reduce pollutants, thus reducing global warming.

Introduction

Renewable energy–powered desalination plants operate with either a mechanical process or a thermal distillation process. In the mechanical process (reverse osmosis and vapor compression ), a distinction is made between network-bound and non-network systems (isolated systems). The electrical energy needs may be provided by wind power or solar power using a photovoltaic (PV) system. Hybrid systems are often used in order to continue operation in low wind periods or at low irradiance. Some facilities, for example, use diesel engines.
