Basic Information
The Austrian Society for Medieval Archaeology was founded in 1985. As in other countries, the importance of the archaeology of recent historical periods grew immensely during the mid-twentieth century and a framework for scientific exchange was therefore needed. In line with this, the Society has the dual objectives of promoting research on the archaeology of the Medieval and Post-Medieval periods in Austria and opening these fields up to interested laymen and women. Archaeological sources and their interpretation in a historical context provide the main focus for the work of the Society. Also, interdisciplinary approaches are strongly encouraged together with collaboration with neighboring humanities and the natural sciences.
