A group of microbial cells grown at the same spot. They may have originated from a single cell or from several. The shape of the colony for a certain bacterial strain may vary according to the nutrient content and diffusion, the movement and reproduction of the bacteria, and local cell communication. Colony characteristics are used as a criterion for classification.
