Atomic energy can be liberated either by nuclear fission or by fusing lighter atomic nuclei (e.g., hydrogen) into heavier ones and, in the process of thermonuclear reaction, generate huge amount of energy. If this reaction could be made slower (rather than explosive), humanity could get access to vast amounts of inexpensive energy.  nuclear fission
