Definition

Earthquake resistant design consists of an evaluation of the earthquake excitation and the structure response to this excitation at a particular site in order to provide a structural system that will not collapse, that may prevent loss of life and will limit economic loss during an earthquake.

Introduction

Earthquake Engineering, the study of earthquake resistant design, is a relatively new discipline. The importance of earthquake resistant building design was first appreciated worldwide after observations of the widespread building failure, damage and life loss associated with the 1906 San Francisco earthquake (USA) (Bisch, 2009). It can be observed that the trigger to developing and updating seismic codes for regulating and guiding earthquake resistant design has often been damaging earthquake events.
