Rhodes University is a small university campus in Grahamstown with one of the highest research outputs per capita in South Africa. Allan Gray Senior Scholarship

Subjects: Commerce (accounting, economics, management and information systems).

Purpose: To encourage and enable previously disadvantaged South Africans to pursue their studies at Honours and Master’s levels.

Eligibility: Open to previously disadvantaged South African students with the appropriate qualifications.

Henderson Postgraduate Scholarships

Subjects: Mathematical, physical, earth, life and pharmaceutical sciences, accountancy and information systems.

Purpose: To encourage and enable students to pursue their studies at the Master’s and doctoral levels, and to enhance recipients’ research abilities and produce internationally competitive graduates with an innovative, analytical, articulate and well-rounded desire to learn.

Eligibility: Open to South African citizens with appropriate qualifications.

Hugh Kelly Fellowship

Subjects: All areas of science.

Purpose: To enable senior scientists to devote themselves to advanced work.

Eligibility: Open to suitable senior postdoctoral scientists with a very well-established research output record. Preference is given to candidates willing to accept appointments for at least 4 months. Applicants must be English speakers.

Level of Study: Postdoctorate, Research

Type: Fellowship

Value: Currently under review, but a package of approx. Rand 70,000. If the Fellow accepts an appointment for at least 4 months and is accompanied by a spouse, the spouse’s air or rail fares will also be paid. University accommodation will be provided free of charge, but the provision of a telephone if available at the place of residence will be for the Fellow’s personal account

Hugh Le May Fellowship

Subjects: Humanities.

Purpose: To enable senior scholars of standing in the humanities to devote themselves to advanced work.

Eligibility: Open to scholars from the humanities with a well established research output record. Applicants must be English speaking.

Type: Fellowship

Value: A return economy class air ticket from the Fellow’s place of residence, furnished University accommodation and a small monthly cash stipend, free use of the University Library and sports facilities

Length of Study: 3–4 months, extended by mutual agreement and subject to the availability of funds

Patrick and Margaret Flanagan Scholarship

Purpose: To enable South African women graduates to attend a university in the United Kingdom in order to obtain a higher postgraduate qualification.

Eligibility: Open to women graduates, preferably those who are English-speaking applicants of South African descent. Selection is based initially on academic merit, as well as broader qualities of intellect and character.

Ruth First Scholarship

Subjects: Humanities, social science students whose fields of study are politics, sociology, philosophy, anthropology, economics, social policy, democracy studies, development studies, media studies, or studies in cog rate disciplines with a strong social and human rights orientation.

Purpose: The scholarship is intended to support candidates whose research is in the spirit of Ruth First’s life and work, poses difficult social questions, and links knowledge and politics and scholarship and action.

Eligibility: For Masters or PhD study and black South African or Mozambican women candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.
