Definition

TEHL conditions usually occur when the lubricant temperature is high enough that it leads to reduction of the lubrication film thickness and frictional stresses. This is due to a steep reduction of lubricant viscosity with increased temperature. These effects become more pronounced in cases of contacts lubricated with fluids described by non-Newtonian rheologies and in cases of high sliding. A lubricant has a non-Newtonian rheology when the shear stress in lubricant is a nonlinear function of the gradient of lubricant velocity. In problems for heavily loaded TEHL contacts there exists a small parameter related to contact heavy loading. The asymptotic methods applied to the analysis of these problems are of an analytical nature and make use of the small parameter and represent problem solutions in the form of asymptotic expansions.
