Proposed Mechanism(s) of Action

Reduces the breakdown of norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine via the inhibition of monoamine oxidase.

Indication

Depression (atypical, nonendogenous, neurotic).

Off Label Use

Treatment-resistant depression, panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder.

Side Effects

Serious

Hypertensive crisis, seizures, liver toxicity, and mania.

Common

Orthostatic hypotension, syncope, sexual dysfunction, nausea, weight gain, blurred vision, dizziness, sedation, headache, sleep disturbance, tremor, weakness, and fatigue.
