Definition
Macular Disease is a degenerative retinal eye disease that causes damage to the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for clear, detailed vision, needed for activities like reading, driving or recognising faces. Age-related macular degeneration, affecting people over 50 years of age, is the most common form of macular disease and is the leading cause of blindness in the Western world, but there are others, including Stargardt's disease and Best's macular degeneration, which have earlier onset, often when people are in their teens and twenties.
