The Atrial Fibrillation Follow-Up Investigation of Rhythm Management (AFFIRM) Trial is one of the largest randomized clinical trials comparing “rhythm control” (using antiarrhythmic drugs) and “rate control” strategies in patients with AF. After ∼5 years’ follow-up of > 4000 patients, no significant differences were found in death, stroke or quality of life.
