Microbodies are ubiquitous in eukaryotic cells; they are bounded by a single membrane and contain electron-dense, often crystalline, inclusions. The microbodies are probably pinched off from the ER at sites, where the ~ 40 enzymes (e.g. oxidases, catalases) contained in microbodies accumulate (when synthesized at free ribosomes). The often spherical microbodies may attain diameters of 0.2–1.7 μm, depending on their type. The four general types are the hydrogenosomes , the peroxisomes , glyoxisomes and the glycosomes . It is not completely decided whether the so-called dense bodies of the coccidians also belong to the group of microbodies.
