Definition

The proteome has been defined as the entire protein complement expressed by a genome. Thus the field of proteomics involves the extensive study of the dynamic protein products of the genome and includes the identification, characterization and quantitation of proteins and their interactions.

Genome and Proteome

The term proteome was introduced in 1995 (1) and has spread world wide within just a few years. Proteome is the linguistic equivalent of the term genome and describes the whole complement of proteins expressed by a cell at any given time. In contrast to the genome, the proteome is dynamic and very complex. The expression of a gene has no definitive relationship to the expression or abundance of its protein product.
