Orexin A and orexin B (also known as hypocretins) are two hypothalamic neuropeptides derived from the same precursor by proteolytic processing. When injected into cerebral ventricles of rats, orexin A and orexin B stimulate food consumption. Inactivating mutations of orexins or the orexin receptor HCRTR2 cause narcolepsy in mice and dogs. Orexins act through high-affinity G-protein-coupled receptors.
