Definition

Mutual exchange of cells and/or DNA between the organism of the donor and the host.

Full Text

Mixed chimerism frequently takes place when organs or cells are transplanted from one organism into the other resulting in mutual allogeneic persistence of "foreign" cells both in the organism of the host and in the transplant. Mixed chimerism can support the success of organ transplantation by facilitating transplantation tolerance.
