Definition
One goal of current proteomic approaches is to provide a listing of all the proteins present in either an organelle, cell type or whole tissue at a particular point in time. Although such data are extremely valuable, this is only one step towards our understanding of global protein function. Once a particular set of proteins has been identified, methodologies must be applied to screen these proteins for their cellular role. In this regard, functional assays can be defined as systematic in vivoexperiments that are designed to determine the involvement of each protein in a particular cellular pathway or biological process. This approach provides both the first clues to the cellular role of individual proteins and a means to classify the proteome into functionally related groups.
