Introduction

Present day Greece (or Hellas) covers 132 000 km 2 (50 944 mi 2; Fig. 259). This area is appreciably more than the core of ancient Greece, but less than the extent of the territories occupied at times by the Greeks during antiquity. These occupied territories were scattered all over the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The present Greek capital is Athens, and modern Greece comprises three main parts.
