In integrated services digital networks (ISDNs), a telecommunications service that (a) uses very short messages with very low data signaling rates (DSRs) between the user and the network, (b) is computer-based, (c) usually operates at a low data rate, and (d) provides the user, customer, or operator with conveniences that save time and effort in managing various every-day fragmented and miscellaneous transactions such areas as merchandise check-out and inventory control, electronic funds transfer, automatic teller machine (ATM) operation, lottery transactions, home and office security and surveillance, remote meter reading, and remote control of home and office appliances and equipment, such as radio-controlled garage doors and remote hotwater heater switches.
