Performing calculations, such as computing the value of an algebraic expression when numbers are substituted for the operands, i.e., the arguments, parameters, or variables, in the expression. Note 1: Number crunching is usually performed with a computer. Note 2: Examples of number crunching are (a) the calculation of the value of the geometric series a(1 + r + r2 + r3 + ...rn) when a value is given to a, r, and n and (b) evaluating the value of a matrix of numbers. Note 3: In communications systems management, number crunching is performed in route selection, traffic and statistical analyses, and service-charge calculations.
