A piece of software or a computational strategy that is based on a problem statement from the user, uses reasoning knowledge about the problem area in attempting to derive a solution, gathers needed problem-specific information (e.g., from the user) in the course of reasoning, explains why it needs this added information, presents the solution to the user, and explains the line of reasoning used in reaching the solution.  Artificial intelligence;  Expert systems.
