Introduction
The coastline of Georgia (
1) extends southeast from the Russian border near Adler to the Turkish border south of Batumi, a distance of 312 km. The coastal features are determined by several factors: the coast-parallel structure of the Great Caucasus alternating southward with the large synclinal Colchis Lowland and the Little Caucasus range near Batumi, the narrow and steep sea floor, which allows large waves to reach the coast, the generally southward longshore drifting, and the massive loss of sediment into submarine canyons that cross the shelf in front of the mouths of the rivers Mzymta, Psou, Kodori and Chorokhi.
