In February 2004, during the UNESCO meeting in Paris, 25 members were accepted into the Global Geoparks Network, marking the formal establishment of the UNESCO-supported Global Geoparks Network. Its formal name is the ‘Global Geoparks Network’ or ‘Global Network of National Geoparks’, abbreviated ‘GGN’. The official logo of the Global Geoparks Network indicates that a national geopark is a member of this global network. Any national geopark can be accepted as a member after being successfully reviewed and receiving a formal approval letter from the GGN Secretariat. The office of the Global Geoparks Network is located in Beijing, China, in the same building as the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences.
