At 14:28:04 on 12 May 2008, a magnitude 8 earthquake occurred in Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province. The epicentre was located in Yingxiu Town. The Wenchuan earthquake was the third strongest recorded earthquake in China after the magnitude 8.5 earthquake in Motuo, Tibet, on 15 August 1950 and the Kunlun Mountain earthquake (magnitude 8.1) in 2001. An area of approximately 100,000 km2 was seriously affected, causing severe damage to many roads, building collapses, rockfalls, landslides, mudflows and the formation of numerous earthquake-dammed lakes. The Tangjiashan Earthquake Lake was the largest dammed lake in Wenchuan after the earthquake, with a volume of 145 million cubic metres (Fig. 11).
