Synonym: Geotectonics
Geotectonics includes massive regional (or even intercontinental, oceanic, or global) structures that can serve as a structural framework. These megastructures affect the regional tectonics, land subsidence, magmatic activity, metamorphism and basic regional geologic characteristics, and they also control the geologic evolution of a region. Geotectonics is an area of integrated comprehensive research based on regional strata, tectonic and magmatic activity, and metamorphism. Its objective is to understand the basic characteristics of the continental crust and oceanic crust, to categorize different geotectonic units, to determine the formation mechanisms and development processes of different tectonic units, such as orogenic belts and tectonic basins, and to determine the composition, structure and evolution of the crust and lithosphere.
