A Plinian-type eruption is a particularly strong type of volcanic eruption named after the Roman volcanologist and naturalist Pliny, who was killed during a catastrophic eruption of Vesuvius during his survey. This type of volcano has viscous magma and forms eruption columns composed of volcanic ash and pumice along with pyroclastic flows, ground surges and falling tuff. Caldera collapses are also common.
