Located in Yongjing County in Gansu Province, approximately 80 km from Lanzhou City, the Liujia Gorge is a deep valley along the upper course of the Yellow River (Huanghe). The Yellow River runs west from here in a large curve, and Liujia Gorge is one of the nine bends in the Yellow River. In 1969, the Liujiaxia hydropower dam was completed; it has a height of 147 m, a length of 84 m and a top width of 16 m. The reservoir formed by the dam has a capacity of 5.7 billion m3, which reflects the enormous size of the gorge (Fig. 26).
