Synopsis

The coronation of Chhatrapati Shivaji was an event far greater in importance than is generally accorded to it, especially in non-Marathi circles. It marked the end of over 300 years of foreign rule. Chhatrapati Shivaji for the first time in three centuries brought in laws governed by the Hindu dharma and a court language free of the foreign Persian. A coronation according to the dharmashastras and a royal seal that was not in an alien language. Above all, here was a Hindu king who was finally the Chhatrapati, a king who did not have to bow to a Mughal emperor or sultan.

This article is not about the political or diplomatic exploits of Chhatrapati Shivaji. Instead, I look at his importance from a cultural point of view and his place in history as seen from the Hindu perspective. Essentially, the article dwells on a few specific aspects at length:
