In Ghana the term ‘tertiary education’ is preferred to ‘higher education’ and covers both university and non-university institutions. Tertiary education institution consists of : universities, university colleges, certain post-secondary diploma-awarding institutions, professional bodies or institutes accredited to award certificates, diplomas, or professional training and practising licenses.

Ghana is in West Africa, and is located on longitude 0° (Greenwich Meridian) and about 3° above latitude 0° (the equator). It is bounded on the north by Burkina Faso, the south by the Atlantic Ocean, the west by la Côte d’Ivoire, and the east by Togo.
