Historical Preliminaries
Romanian higher education emerged as a modern system in the first half of the twentieth century. The premodern institutions of higher learning (e.g., Major Jesuit College in Cluj established in 1582, Vasilian College/Colegiul Vasilian in Iassy established in 1634, Princely Academy/Academia Domnească of Bucharest established in 1694, Princely Academy/Academia Domnească of Iassy established in 1707, Michael Academy/Academia Mihaileană of Iassy established in 1834) were mostly connected to the feudal rulers of the time and to the orthodox or catholic church philosophy and religion. The Union of the Romanian Principalities (1859) into the new nation-state of Romania brought with it the reorganization of former institutions of higher learning as modern universities, particularly the University of Iassy (1862) and the University of Bucharest (1864).
