General Definition

The movement and migration of students and academics or scholars across borders.

In the context of a global knowledge society and “talent war,” international academic mobility has become a prominent policy concern and a key issue of analysis for the higher education and innovation sectors around the world (Teichler 2015). The term “mobility” is generally understood as the movement and migration of students and academics or scholars across borders. Underpinned by human capital theory, it is believed that international mobility of the highly skilled ensures a nation’s economic growth and its role and position in a context of global competition (Fahey and Kenway 2010; Van der Wende 2015). International academic mobility in East and Southeast Asia is a complex and dynamic phenomenon, whose evolution is closely related to the changing face of economic, political, and social development across this large and diverse world...
