Abstract
The Paraná River Delta region is a huge mosaic of wetlands. It covers over 17,500 km2 on the final 330 km of the Lower Paraná River basin, between 60°39′W, 32°6′S south of Diamante City, and 58°30′W, 34°30′S, next to Buenos Aires City, the Capital City of Argentina. This delta is formed in a complex littoral setting that developed mainly during the last 6,000 years BP although some former processes took place during the Late Pleistocene and early Holocene periods. This region is characterized by a high environmental heterogeneity which provides a variety of habitats, all freshwater wetlands, for a productive and rich biodiversity and a wealth of ecological functions. As for biodiversity, while the set of species comprises more than 700 vascular plants, just a few make up the majority of plant biomass. More than 80% of the surface is covered by herbaceous plant communities. Only 4% of the delta area is occupied by different types of native forests located in the less flooded places such as levees and meander spires. As for wildlife, 50 species of mammals, 260 species of non-passerine birds, 37 reptiles and 27 amphibians have been registered in the region. In addition, 200 species of fishes have been registered too, about 60% of the known to the Argentine sector of Paraná-Paraguay River Corridor, the region with the richest freshwater fish in the country. Many wildlife and fish species found here are at the southern limit of their distribution and the Paraná River Delta is an important area for several threatened species. The Paraná River Delta wetlands provide a number of ecosystem functions (such as the reduction in water flow rate and turbulence, increased short- and long-term water retention and storage, and regulation of evapotranspiration) that ensure a good quality of life for local and neighboring areas’ inhabitants. This Delta is no longer a pristine region since it has a long history of use by local people. Despite this, the region still has an important biological and functional diversity that should be preserved. There are varying degrees of threats that affect not only the conservation of wetland biodiversity but also the Delta culture. Some of these threats are regional or originate upstream, while others have local caracter (e.g., impacts of infrastructure, water pollution, urban development, and biological invasions).
